All first-year law students—and second-year law students enrolled in a joint-degree program—who have six law school quarters remaining are eligible to apply for membership on the Shidler Journal. The Shidler Journal welcomes ten new staff members each year.
Applicants must participate in the annual Melissa S. Landers 1L Writing Competition (described below). Factors considered in evaluating applicants for membership on the Shidler Journal include:
The Melissa S. Landers 1L Writing Competition is conducted annually during the two-week period immediately following Spring Quarter exams. The Competition is co-sponsored by the Shidler Journal, Washington Law Review, and Pacific Rim Law & Policy Journal.
The Competition is a closed-universe writing assignment. Participants are required to take a position on a legal issue and persuasively support the position. Participants are provided with all of the cases, statutes, and additional sources they will need to complete the assignment. Outside research is prohibited.
Interested students are encouraged to attend the Competition information session that is held annually during Spring Quarter. The information session will be announced in The Crier. Please contact the Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Shidler Journal for additional information at shidler@u.washington.edu.
